Margaret Atwood once said, "The threat to the planet is us. It's actually not a threat to the planet - it's a threat to us." With our actions we are ultimately harming ourselves and will eventually be our own demise. Canadian author of a sort of speculative fiction, Atwood writes about the future and bases it on realities that are with us today (0:24).
Possible and probable futures (1:00) (like John and Hank Green mention in their videos) are the source of the inventiveness of authors like Atwood. Science fiction is the literature of ideas! With the liberties that this medium allows us, new thoughts and imaginations can be brought to life. And through readers, conceptualized - hopefully in a positive light.
Relating to my theories of how we can grasp onto posthumanism, Atwood realizes that technology will get us there, but at a cost. "Every time we invent a new technology, we like to play with that technology, and we don't always foresee the consequences of that technology" (1:19). With this, I would like to venture off and say that we must use our creativity to generate new technological advancements that will help our environment, thus helping ourselves. If we abuse technology, it will be like history repeating itself: seeing as we have brutally abused our environment and continue to do so. Technology is neither a curse or a blessing. It is a "double-edged sword" as Atwood says (2:17).
